If you’ve been stumped by a restaurant wine list and resort to the second cheapest bottle of plonk by default, help is at hand. Wine platform, CellarTracker, has launched a service in its app that allows diners to scan the wine list with their phone camera, input food choices and their own preferences, and the app will reveal which wines meet their criteria.
Based on the 14 million community reviews across five million different wines, the tracker looks to people’s real life experiences and tastes to build a picture of what wine will match an individual’s particular tastes. The service is supposed to complement, not replace, the advice of a real-life sommelier or wine professional. Instead, the company says it will be “helping diners make more informed choices and have better conversations about wine”.
Originally built for cellar management, CellarTracker has evolved into a platform where about 10 million wine drinkers use it each year to decide what to buy, order, and open. The new restaurant wine list experience brings that guidance directly to the table.
