Waitrose has fitted electronic shelf labels from SOLUM into more than 200 of its UK stores, as its store digitalisation programme continues to roll out across the estate.
The partnership was first confirmed in December 2025, when Waitrose began deploying SOLUM’s Newton Pro ESLs to replace paper shelf-edge labels with centrally managed digital displays. The system lets pricing and product information be updated across stores from a central point, rather than changed by hand at each location.
Waitrose says the change is freeing up Partners from manual label-changing, giving them more time on the shop floor with customers, and reducing the risk of pricing errors or inconsistency between stores.
Installations have been carried out store by store while locations remain open, with each phase planned around individual store layouts.
Mark Duckworth, SOLUM’s Country Manager for UK & Ireland, said:
“Reaching the 200-store mark is an important milestone, but more importantly, it reflects how retailers are rethinking the role of technology within the store. Digital shelf technology is fast becoming part of the connected retail infrastructure that enables stores to respond more quickly, operate more efficiently and deliver a better experience for Partners and customers alike. We’re proud to be supporting Waitrose as it continues that journey.””
The ESLs cover Waitrose’s fresh, ambient and specialist categories. Deployment is ongoing, with more stores still to be converted.
